Kimani made it up to the Midnight Grace. It was his first time on a luxury space cruiser. He felt out of place. The opulence all around him upset his middle-class sensibilities. He reminded himself it was only for a couple nights. He could enjoy some pampering for a few days.

A steward showed him to his room. “There is a fully stocked bar along this wall,” Jamalan said, pointing out the floor to ceiling refrigeration unit with the smart screen door. “Everything inside is covered in the price of your suite but if you want something else the kitchen is open 24/7. Everything about this suite is customizable. You can change the in-room scent, change the light color, temperature, even adjust the gravity setting for those not used to the solar standard of zero point seventy-five g. Just ask Grace and she’ll do it for you.”

Kimani nodded, looking around. His eyes hesitated on the door next to his closet. That was the one leading to the adjoining room reserved for Kyndra. He hadn’t thought to see if it could be canceled. Maybe Kyndra did it herself. He didn’t have the energy to ask.

“The suit you ordered for the concert is here,” Jamalan continued, opening the closet so Kimani could see the suit hanging up. Kimani didn’t know a lot about fashion, so he’d let the shop’s AI help him decide what to wear. It said that the asymmetric tunic top with straight-legged pants in contrasting colors was all the rage on Mars right now and everyone knew that Mars was the fashion capital of the solar system, so he went with that. He chose a forest green shirt with golden buttons down the front, navy-blue pants, and golden shoes to round it all out.

“And those shoes, excellent choice. I love them,” Jamalan said picking up the shoes and showing them off to Kimani.

Kimani felt his cheeks warm. “Thanks. I wanted to look good for the concert and my celebrity experience.”

“Oh man, no way! You get to have the VIP experience with Corsica Dalis? I’m jealous.” Jamalan’s eyes went wide as he remembered himself. “Sorry for the outburst, sir. I’ll just leave now.”

Kimani felt weird being called sir by someone who was clearly older than him. He waved the formality away. “It’s okay. Corsica is awesome. It’s nice to talk to a fellow fan.”

Jamalan smiled and nodded. “I tried to be part of her welcome party, but they said I was too junior to handle a person of her status. She’s been on board for a week now and I’ve only seen her once in the hallway. Never even got to say hi. She’s so talented and gorgeous and kind. I just want to say hi. She’s supposed to be with us the whole trip to Titian. I’m determined to talk to her at least once.”

“Yeah, I’m excited to meet her. I’m sure you’ll get your chance.” Kimani sighed. Now that he was in his room, he felt tired. He’d had a sleepless night and an emotionally fraught morning.
